FLATS vs ROUNDS. What's the difference?...

We started KOOSHOO in 2012 as one small change that could make a big difference. It was our goal to create products that addressed a need while making a positive impact on the world.

We set out to show that business could be done in a way that could uplift workers, their communities and the environment. Paying people fair living wages to work in safe, healthy environments; using sustainable, pesticide-free natural materials that encourage healthy plants and soil.

The overwhelming enthusiasm for our Headbands and our Flat Hair Ties really validated our mission. There was a need and a desire to reinvent simple products in a modern way. And from the beginning, we knew there was a demand for more - especially for a “round” elastic that looked like the ones we all grew up with.

Years of research and development later, here we are.

So what’s the difference from our game-changing, best-selling Flat hair ties?

Well, the shape, for one. The Flats you know and love are wide and, well, flat. Made in India, via a completely transparent supply chain, and they have a unique look to them - whether in the hair or on the wrist.

They are great for tying hair back, especially thicker ponytails. The soft organic cotton means they don’t tug or pull hair, making for a more comfortable, headache-free all-day (and night) hold. They come in so many unique shades (to match your hair, your mood or your outfit), and they’re really a style statement - whether in the pony or on the wrist.

The new KOOSHOO Rounds have a tubular shape. Thinner and rounded from all angles, they look more like the hair elastics you grew up with.

They also come in two different sizes (Minis and Mondos) - so they’re great for all sorts of hair types and hairstyles. Little braids are big news these days, and the Minis perform better than any of the plastic elastics you’re used to.

Mondos are a bigger version of the same innovative product. Great for bigger braids, thicker hair and curls, these ones fit on wrists - which we all know is where they often get stored! Offered in shades that are designed specifically by KOOSHOO to give you unique options - they are the hair ties you’ve all been waiting for.

The new Rounds are made in Japan where the standards for working conditions are extremely high. For example, their minimum wage is above the living wage. Japan is also a founding member state of the International Labour Organisation. And our partner is a 4th generation family business that has won local awards for being an exemplary employer.

Where the Flats and the Rounds overlap is what we’re even more proud of.

Both collections are plastic-free and made from plants. They are both handcrafted from premium organic cotton and natural tree rubber and are over 2x stronger than your average hair tie (we have the lab results to prove it). Both gentle on hair and longer-lasting than “traditional” (aka plastic) hair ties. And because of their packaging (including plastic-free shipping supplies) - they make great gifts for your friends who are as passionate as you about eco-friendly, ethically-made products.

plastic-free hair ties - round vs flat

So whether you favour the flat, recommend the round, or like to mix things up with some of each (cause let’s face it, you kind of need both, and bundling them makes sense for shipping too!), we promise you’ll find your fit and look good doing it.
