The Journey That Matters

Posted on July 25, 2014 by Jesse Schiller | 0 comments

Five years ago Rachel and I traveled through Asia for a year.

We went with 2 flights planned. The first was the flight that would take us to Singapore. The second was the flight that would take us from Singapore to Sydney, Australia, our final stop, one year later.

It was a blank canvas of a year - a prospect that was both exhilarating and terrifying. A lot like starting a business, I understand now.

As we crisscrossed our way across the continent, using every form of transport conceived of by man, having an end to the journey increasingly became important to us.

For one, there are only so many marathon smoking-allowed bus journeys, cramped train rides and cross-your-fingers-plane-will-stay-in-the-air flights, that one can comfortably manage in a year.

But beyond that, we knew that this was just a step in a much larger journey and we were excited to apply our learnings from the time away to building our foundation back at home.

Around the time this photo was taken (in Southern India), we had begun to talk about starting our own business.

The name KOOSHOO, the organic accessories (including the fittingly named Journey Shawl) and the wonderful community that would evolve around the brand were still far off dreams; however we did know one thing: we wanted to make a positive difference in the world.

I love this quote because it reminds me how important it is to have goals in life, but more importantly, how important it is to enjoy the ups and downs along the way to that goal.

After all, when I look back on my life, it's getting to the goals, and not the goals themselves, that I remember most.
