An Ending and New Beginnings...

Posted on July 21, 2014 by Jesse Schiller | 7 comments

A little over a year ago we had a great idea.

At the time we were selling 2 colors of our popular Smoke Shawls. Both were made from Tencel and both were hand dyed in our awesome solar powered facility. The shawls were selling strong and, based on our forecasts, it wouldn’t be long till they were both sold out. (The Amrit Vela is indeed all gone, but 5 precious Dawn Shawls remain)

The obvious choice was to go back to production on the hand dyed shawl and stick with what was working.

But there was this distinct sensation that there was so much more potential to be tapped with this product.

Tencel, the material that we were using, is an absolutely incredible fabric. Not only is it one of the cleanest, most sustainable fabrics in the world (water and sustainably-harvested wood go into the factory, fabric comes out), it had a host of properties that we felt could be better showcased.

Those properties include:

  • Breathability
  • Strength
  • Drapes beautifully
  • Wrinkle-resistant
  • Carries dye brilliantly

We also knew we had something special with our dye house. As the only solar-powered dye house in the world, we had struck a strong friendship and bond with Gloria, our chief dyer, and knew that the potential for art on fabric with her at the helm was limitless.

So we looked at the Tencel and the dye process and the idea came: “how do you get more value when your inputs are already so strong? You make a product that can become every product!”

That’s the story of how this beautiful product below came to be.

One year of dedicated work later that dream is now a reality because of the incredible support we received through our Kickstarter campaign.

Thanks to wonderful human beings in 23 countries around the world, we turned a multi-use shawl from a concept into reality. It’s with great pride that we can now say that we’ve shipped 99% of the packages (if you’re 1 of the 2 people who has not submitted your address, please get in touch).

This means that from that simple idea one year ago, there are now Journey Shawls literally on every continent of the world. Pretty amazing!

With the Journey Shawls now reaching their destinations globally we’ve been receiving the most heart-warming, thoughtful messages from owners. One of my favorites:

Hey! I freaking live in my shawl!! Thank you guys for doing such a great job!!

If you love your Journey Shawl (and your organic cotton headbands and hairties) there is one thing you can do that would mean the world to us.... tell your friends!

As a small company (2 people full time – me and Rachel), we do our best to let the world know about our little company but our reach is only so much. Together, with your help, that reach gets magnified in a huge way.

To make sharing a little more fun, check out our REWARDS page where you can invite your friends to KOOSHOO and earn $10 credit when they make their first purchase. Your friends will ALSO receive $10 towards their first purchase.

Thank you so much in advance for this. It means a ton to us.

One final piece of news that we’d like to share with you this lazy summer Monday afternoon...

With each of the Kickstarter packages that we mailed out, there was a little something extra that we included. A magic, if you will.

That magic was brought by the energy that only a woman bringing new life into the world can carry.

It’s with so much happiness and love that Rachel and I would like to share with you that we’re expecting our first child. So, come November, there will officially be 3 people to the full-time KOOSHOO team!

As Rachel was hand packing the Kickstarter headbands, hairties and Journey Shawls, we made sure that some of that special magic was shared with each package as it went out. Hope you felt it when your package arrived.

So very grateful to you, our incredible community, for all that you are.

Sending lots of love,

Jess & Rach

P.S. We've shot some fun How-to-Wear videos for the Journey Shawls and are editing them this week. They will be appearing shortly at www.kooshoo.com/howtowear

I told you I felt that you put something special into the making of the packages :-D
Congratulations, you two! I am really happy for you <3

    All the best from Germany!

Greetings from across the pond in England – I love my Journey Shawl and it will be coming on holiday with me to the glorious Isles of Scilly in August. Looking forward to seeing the videos of all the different ways to wear it – I have been experimenting myself but can’t figure out the cross-over dress-top look! Fabulous news about the baby – perhaps you could produce a baby-sized version of the journey shawl for your own little god or goddess.

Hi Rachel and Jesse, congratulations on achieving your goal. I look forward to my shawls arriving. But even more, congratulations on your wonderful news – a baby added to your family will make your love even stronger. xx

Thanks Smoph, Vicky, Em and Charlie for the kind words. It’s deeply appreciated!

Thank you for keeping your kickstarter backers in the loop throughout this whole process. I love my blue Journey Shawl, it is so comfty. The fact that it is sustainable makes it that much better! Congrats on the little one, the magic may not have been felt once I immediately opened my Journey Shawl but it certainly is from here on out.
